iBASIS (intervention in BASIS) is a new pilot program, designed by UK experts in autism intervention and led by a team of BASIS scientists in Manchester. The program involves weekly sessions, using video-feedback methods, designed to enhance parents’ understanding of their infant’s social communication patterns at a very young age. Families taking part in iBASIS are also invited to visit the BabyLab, so that the impact of providing such a home-based intervention for families can be accurately measured. Feedback from early trials of the program shows that parents find the intervention enjoyable and rewarding, often feeling they get to know their baby better than they would otherwise, at what is a crucial time in his or her development.
